An evocative but discreet presence, originality of form, simple and absolute lines: these are the characteristics of Aretha, the new model designed by Ferruccio Laviani, which confirms Foscarini's intention to offer highly emotive lighting models. Aretha, the floor lamp with reflected light, underlines Laviani's approach to the project. It is an approach based on the charm exerted by shapes and wrappings that contain light. "As always when I'm thinking about a new model, I think of something I would like to have, something I don't have," - says Ferruccio Laviani. "After designing Teorema, which had precise references to deconstructivism, to the kinetic art of the '50s and '60s and to the genial Mathieu Matégot's metal sheet furniture, I thought it was time for something simple, almost a return to the old school of good design: form and function. Maybe I didn't achieve this synthesis, but I certainly designed an easy to produce lamp that besides giving light is also - in my view - pleasant to behold. It consists of a simple, two-color folded metal sheet - the outside colored and the inside always white - and a sort of elliptic tube cut in half with the exception of the part that hides the lamp holder and acts as a diffuser. The light it gives off is almost entirely refracted, while a thin cut on the shade allows light to emanate from the backside as well. It is a bit reminiscent of the "floor-based halogen lamps" that were in style in the '80s, but revised and modernized in a way that is contemporary and yet never invasive". Aretha combines full and empty spaces with simple but decisive lines creating a sophisticated play of planes that is emphasized by the light effect.
