Ichikawadaimon has been known as a centre for washi paper production since the Heian period. In recent years, Onao Co ltd has combined tradition with new technologies, developing paper that can be used for interior and for practical everyday products. Currently collaborating with industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa to create a range of products using Naoron , a new type of paper that does not tear easily, recently developped by Onao. Mr Fukasawa declares be delighted to work with Onao, maker of traditional Washi paper, and to create things that make the most of Onao's history and technical skills.
The name "SIWA" is derived from the "shiwa" or wrinkles in the paper, as well as being a reversal of the order of the two characters making up the word "washi" ( Japanese paper).In detail:
