Disco Cesellato Tray by Alessi

Disco Cesellato: the eternal seduction of scrolls and flourishes. Among Alessi's historical moments, there was a time, which lasted about twenty years between the ‘40s and ‘60s, in which the company, parallel to the rising production in design (the Avio series, the 870 shaker by Massoni, Mazzeri and Vitale) developed several lines of objects inspired by the classic styles of European silverware. Implicit in their kitsch value these items have always been loved by a certain type of public. This notion of decoration, inspired by the eighteenth-century, has been taken up again today by Mendini with a new project of chiseled surfaces: very simple-shaped trays were engraved with scrolls and flourishes.

Alessi Italian manufacturing soared to new heights in the 20^th century and one company is synonymous with this lofty ascent. Beginning with coffee sets and trays and by the 1950s collaborating with international architects and designers including Ettore Sottsass, Alessi gained international popularity with its first cult object designed by Richard Sapper in 1978. Linking the present to the past, Sapper designed an espresso coffee pot. Philippe Starck was soon to follow with the Juicy Salif lemon squeezer, which has found its way into the Whitney Collection in New York. In fact, Alessi products can be found in museums across the world. Innovation and experimentation are two keys to understanding Alessi’s success.
