Foscarini table lamps: exceptional designer lamps from Italy

Tradition meets modern design: the Foscarini table lamps play with old and new shapes, materials and techniques. The Italian label creates designer lighting which uses fun and poetry to combine traditional craftsmanship and lamp shapes with modern materials and production methods. The collaboration between Italian and international design greats as well as up-and-coming designers paves the way for exciting and striking collections. Discover the delightful Foscarini table lamps at Made in Design.

Foscarini table lamps: between tradition and modernity

The design of the Foscarini table lamps ranges between the two poles: tradition and modernity. An example of this is the Rituals collection by the designer duo Ludovica and Roberto Palomba. The designers have re-interpreted the traditional rice paper Japanese lantern and re-created it in glass, the typical Italian material. The table lamp is available in various sizes: small for a bedside table, medium-sized for use as a table lamp or reading lamp. The enchanting Plass Foscarini table lamp by Luca Nichetto looks as if it is made out of the finest Murano glass, however it is in fact made from skillfully finished polycarbonate. Transparency, sparkling light reflections and a grooved surface create the illusion of glass. The name Plass is a combination of “plastic” and “glass” and hints at the connection between the traditional art of glass blowing from Venice and the alternative of modern materials and techniques.

Playing with shapes and materials

Foscarini table lamps are also characterised by the playful use of different shapes and materials. The Bicnic lamp by young designer Ionna Vautrin has long been a modern design icon. Inspired by the windsocks in the harbours of her home, Brittany, the designer re-interpreted this shape in a playful way. The rounded diffusor sits on a cone-shaped base. It’s not just the shapes of the shade and base that contrast each other, there are also contrasting textures. While the diffusor is glossy, the base appears matte. For table lamps, you can choose between different bright colours, which create a positive atmosphere, such as a soft pink, elegant anthracite, sea green or mustard yellow. While the Foscarini Satellight table lamp by Eugeni Quitllet resembles a poetic light sculpture: a matte, white luminous globe, caught beneath a cover made from transparent glass, appears to float in the air. The exceptional interplay of shapes does not just attract attention when the light is switched on.

The Foscarini label: table lamps from Venice

The Foscarini label was established in 1981 on the Venetian island of Murano. It has been an indispensable part of the design world ever since.
