Pioneer and visionary, the famous designer Philippe Starck continues to innovate: he has created the first chair designed by artificial intelligence. To draw it, Starck used Autodesk, an American company that specialises in 3D design software. To design the A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) chair, Philippe Starck, Autodesk and Kartell asked a single yet crucial question of Dreamcatcher (the generative design software developed by Autodesk): "Would you be able to give our bodies a rest by using as little material and energy as possible? Without culture, without memory, without influence, the software responded only with intelligence, its "artificial" intelligence. A.I. is the first chair designed outside our brains, outside our thinking habits. Human creative thought and artificial intelligence therefore merged to design a chair made completely by an algorithm which meets the original requirements: to create, using as little material and energy as possible, a comfortable, solid seat that complies with the aesthetic canons of the Kartell collections.The A.I. chair is the result of a joint effort between artificial intelligence and human intelligence, defined by Starck himself as "Natural intelligence". Autodesk stated that the design process using the artificial intelligence software was reminiscent of "a child learning". Starck described this process as very similar to a conversation between two human beings. "Why do chairs all look like each other? How can you create a structurally different chair? At one point, I needed to open a new door..." explains Philippe Starck about the creation of the A.I. chair project. This collaboration between human and artificial intelligence has shown that artificial intelligence can assist the work of a designer by calculating what the optimal responses are to a design idea. The A.I. chair is a symbol of the experimental approach to design and the ecological involvement of designer Philippe Starck. "Coming from elsewhere, a new world is now open to us. A world without limits..." concludes Starck. No doubt the A.I. chair marks a turning point for the future of design. Mark Davis, Design Futures Director of Autodesk, states: "Working with Starck and Kartell was a real source of inspiration. The opportunity to understand their design philosophy and their approach to solving problems was invaluable for our team, in the context of our reflection on the future of manufacturing. It is a research collaboration at the height of industrial design, which was able to obtain one of the most creative results that we have tried to achieve with generative design. Thanks to a collaborative relationship with artificial intelligence, humans will see their expertise in terms of design and engineering amplified, which will increase their capacity for innovation and productivity." Pursuing its technological research, Kartell continues to innovate to select new materials that perform increasingly well and are ever more environmentally friendly. The A.I. armchair is made from a 100% recycled thermoplastic technopolymer, coming from industrial waste. With this material, Kartell is making new inroads into environmental sustainability, by using recycled materials, while ridding the environment of waste which is turned back into raw materials, therefore triggering a virtuous cycle of the circular economy.
