Since the early 2000s, the work of brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec has emerged as one of the most representative of the dynamism of French design. Designed in 2004, Cloud is an iconic piece, embodying the work of famous designers. This modular bookcase, made from polyethylene, is open on both sides. Pierced with multiple circular openings, Cloud is a structure with undulating contours, their geometry evading clear definition. "We try to create a kind of visual shock. The constructed space being progressively rectangular, there's a tendency to become progressively shapeless, to create a contrast. We're seeking a way of organising space, and that can be based on separations that are more symbolic in nature than physical. To create the symbolism, we opted for shapes which opposed the geometrical rigour of architecture. They're therefore recognisable, impactful, and surprising." Storage and a partition all at once, this large module can be placed against a wall or even in the middle of a room and hence used as a separation between two spaces. Like a mashrabiya, this openwork and lightweight partitions lets you look through it. Each element comes with two assembly clips to create compositions with several modules and put together storage/partitioning set-ups which suit your needs and wants. The elements of Cloud can be assembled in various senses. The idea is to create a flexible space, enabling it to be adapted to diverse needs.Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec: "The walls that we offer stimulate people, they spark a desire in them to take part in a form of composition, to play with the layout of things… The advantage of these composing systems is that they question the people using them, making them think about the space that they're living in, its size, its layout, and which they often try to answer in an unexpected and creative way."
