Description

A multicultural, ethnic design, brought to life by subtle touches of colour ... French designer Pauline Deltour has created a mirror inspired by the creative language of South America. The Killa mirror stands out for the convex shape of its frame. Hand-crafted in Colombia, in the Nariño region, the Killa mirror is the result of exceptional craftsmanship. The frame is made of hand-woven Iraca palm fibre. This natural material is used to make Panama's typical hats. The natural fibre is held in place by coloured wire that creates a subtle contrast and brings a contemporary dimension to the mirror. Iraca fibre work plays an important role in the Nariño region, a province of south-western Colombia. The products manufactured there are exported all over the world. The inhabitants of Linares, Pasto, Sandoná and La Cruz not only weave hats with this rigid material; they also make bags, baskets ... A source of inspiration for Pauline Deltour, immediately fascinated by the material and technique. Growing Iraca is difficult and depends on good weather and soil conditions. To obtain the raw material, Iraca fibre, craftsmen have to perform a number of complex tasks using rudimentary tools: they must first harvest the leaves, remove the buds and stalks, then chop, boil, rinse and blanch them. The fibres are then naturally dyed with seeds, leaves, nuts and roots. After dyeing, the fibres are drained and dried for several days. The Killa mirror carries the magical DNA of Colombia: it’s both exuberant, rich in humanity, modern and full of vitality. A treat for the eyes and an invitation to travel... The Killa mirror was born following designer Pauline Deltour's trip to Colombia. Concerned with bringing originality and authenticity to her creations, she met local craftspeople who have managed to preserve and pass on real expertise and traditional production methods over the centuries. Pauline Deltour visited the region of Nariño and the city of Bogotá. There, she met many artisans who have settled in the heart of the cities in the last twenty years, having left the countryside to flee war and violence. In order to support their families, they keep local knowledge alive and preserve techniques that would otherwise have been forgotten.
