Description

"Treat yourself to an ORIGINAL iconic piece by Vitra. An original will always hold its value. It will stay with you for your whole life and outlast you, to be passed on to the next generation. Swiss design house Vitra is the only company authorised to manufacture Charles & Ray Eames products for Europe: if you own an Eames product manufactured by Vitra, you can be sure it’s an original. Charles and Ray Eames are two of the most important designers of the 20th century. Their work includes furniture design, film and photography as well as exhibition design. An icon of organic design, “La Chaise” is a piece of furniture as well as an aesthetic manifesto. This armchair with its surprisingly voluminous curves was designed in 1948 by the Eames couple in response to a competition organised by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Exploiting the infinite plasticity of polyurethane for the first time in a seat, Charles and Ray Eames were inspired to design it by the "Floating figure" sculpture by American artist of French origin Gaston Lachaise (1882-1935). In addition to its strong sculptural presence, the La Chaise seat is characterised by the multiple positions it lets you adopt, from the seated position to lying down through various intermediaries conducive to reading, relaxation, conversation or a nap. From its conception, La Chaise has become the true icon of organic design. A spectacular creation with its voluminous shape and generous dimensions, this icon of organic design requires a particularly expensive manufacturing process. That’s why it wasn’t until the development of new production techniques and strong public demand that in 1996, Vitra finally decided to produce and distribute La Chaise. La Chaise has been part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York since 1949. La Chaise is a timeless piece that, despite the decades, continues to appeal and make people dream! Its rarity, volume and bold lines are all qualities that appeal to and justify its status as a design icon."
