Alexander Girard, born in 1907 in New York, is one of the most important figures in the history of post-war American design, along with his close friends and colleagues George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames. Girard's work was primarily focused on textile design, but he also stood out as a graphic designer, furniture designer, set designer and interior designer. Girard brought to 20th century design a seductive and playful dimension that was missing from the austere aesthetics of classical modernism. Vitra and the Vitra Design Museum have been working for many years to reappraise and revive the work of Alexander Girard. As an interior designer, Girard developed many concepts for restaurants that went far beyond colour schemes and furniture to include details such as menus, matchboxes, dishes and napkins. The designs on the Coffee Mugs were inspired by the richness of these different environments.
