"Notice to collectors! Released in 2000, the iconic Mayday lamp from Konstantin Grcic is celebrating its 20th birthday: to mark the occasion, Flos is offering a limited "Anniversary" edition. With an aluminium handle (the handle on the original model is made from polypropylene), this edition, limited to just 2020 copies, is engraved with the signature of Konstantin Grcic and the item number. The use of the metal strengthens the industrial dimension of the famous wireless lamp. An essential design star, the German, Konstantin Grcic, designed the Mayday wireless lamp in 2000. Awarded with a "Compasso d’oro" in 2001, Mayday has since reached icon status, and has been exhibited in the most prestigious museums (MoMA, the Pompidou centre. etc). The Mayday lamp is one of the best examples of the work of Konstantin Grcic. Partisan like the great Achille Castiglioni of the "re-design", he redesigned a simple product, the work light, to develop it and adapt it to a domestic use. The aim: to update, adding a touch of contemporary irony. The unknown must arise from the very well-known. A fan of Formula 1 races, Grcic took inspiration from the lamps used by car mechanics: no frills lamps, equipped with a hook which lets you attach them under the bonnet of a car. Grcic favours a functional approach to design: he qualifies his style as "current, feasible and concrete". The May Day lamp is emblematic of Grcic's approach: its simple and elegant design meets a selection of requirements. It can be carried, stood or hooked, the handle serving as both a roller for the cable and a hook to hang it. Fascinated by the body's position, Grcic appears to have designed this light as an extension of the arm's movement. Konstantin Grcic on Mayday: "I designed the May Day lamp as a tool. It has a practical handle which incorporates the ON/OFF switch and two points to roll up the 5 metre-long cable. A large hook on the end of the handle makes setting the lamp up where you need it easy. The large white funnel is both reflective and protective. Its smooth plastic gives off a warm light and is it powerful enough to absorb impacts. May Day isn't designed to be specific. Rather it is practical in all kinds of expected/unexpected situations: take it into the garage to work under the old Mercedes Benz. Take it in the garden to hang it from a tree. Use it above a ladder or lying on the ground while trying to get the cat out from behind the cupboard. Children will love it in their cardboard house. I have one by my bed for late-night reading. Another is placed in front of the door to my apartment, just in case". Mayday has an industrial, fun and casual look. The hook is completely practical and decorative."
