The One and Only A Chair by TOLIX: L'Originale, the icon of French design. Repeatedly copied, the A Chair by Tolix has been an icon of industrial aesthetics for almost a century. Designed in 1935, it has stood the test of time and style to become a classic in the collective memory.
Its unfailing sturdiness and refined aesthetic have led to a prestigious and successful career: the Tolix chair was taken aboard the Normandie liner in 1935, and also graced the aisles of the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques in 1937. In the '50s, Tolix took over the terraces of many Coffee shops, before moving into the private sphere. Its unfailing popularity led to its inclusion in the collections of the Vitra Design Museum, the MoMa and the Centre Pompidou... The ultimate consecration and international recognition for this "living heritage" which illustrates the French art of living.
Its designer, Xavier Pauchard, used pressed sheet metal and zinc for the first time in mass-produced furniture. The Tolix chair thus became the first French industrial chair. For almost a century, each A chair that leaves the TOLIX workshops has been handcrafted by craftsmen passing on their traditional know-how of stamping, bending, brazing and polishing. Every chair that leaves our workshops is unique, and bears the Tolix signature stamped into the metal. In 2006, Tolix was awarded the "Living Heritage Company" label by the French Ministry of the Economy, Finance and Industry.
