From the Aegean to the Mediterranean, from the Bosphorus to the quays of the Seine, the Turkish label Uma is the talk of the town!
For over 30 years, Turkish manufacturer Polkima has been producing composite molded parts for the automotive industry at its plant in Izmir. Turkish furniture manufacturer Uma benefits from Polkima's 30 years of experience to create molded composite furniture with breathtaking curves. Uma furniture is produced in the same factory, using the same process as that used to produce London bus interiors! London-based architecture Cabinet Holloway Li collaborated with Uma to design their first collection: a family of modular seating called T4.
Inspired by '90s decor such as lava lamps and inflatable armchairs, T4 seating can be combined to create a variety of looks from single seats to corner sofas. The T4 armchair features a curvilinear fiberglass base and an upholstered seat that's equally at home in a hotel lobby or living room.
''We work a lot with very complex compound curves,'' explains Alex Holloway, architect and half of Holloway Li. ''It fits with our style of creating complex geometries that you couldn't achieve with metal or wood.''
The curvilinear shape of this new furniture collection is the result of a complex, multi-stage manufacturing process. First, a mold is laser-cut in the Polkima factory. The surface of the mold is sprayed with a smooth coating before fiberglass and resin are deposited in the closed mold. After half a day's hardening, the craftsmen remove the furniture from the mold and hand-polish it to a soft sheen. The Fabric upholstery, made by another local fabricator, is assembled on site.
The possibilities for molded composites are endless. The material is so durable and easy to clean that it could be used in environments where hygiene is essential.
