A multi-faceted career, between movement and matter

Born in Paris in 1932, Marc Held traces a unique trajectory in the history of French design. Self-taught, he started out as a physical education teacher before switching to industrial design in the 1960s. His first creation, a stretcher-based body-building machine (the Strong, 1960), set the tone: function, ergonomics and creativity were at the heart of his approach.

In 1965, he opened L'Echoppe, a gallery-boutique on rue de Seine, where he exhibited his own creations alongside Scandinavian objects. This taste for Nordic design deeply inspired him: it was after a trip to Denmark that he imagined his emblematic Culbuto armchair (Knoll, 1969), today considered an icon of French design furniture. A cult piece, both sculptural and playful, conceived with the democratization of design in mind.

From Prisunic to IBM: a polymorphous body of work

Held began working with Prisunic in 1966, designing fiberglass beds that embodied "design for all". But the oil crisis put the brakes on production. At the same time, he worked with Renault in the automotive sector, designing the Sofa, the prototype for the Espace MPV. While these industrial experiences enriched him, they did not distract Held from his quest for sensitive, humanistic design.

In the 1970s, he turned to architecture, with emblematic projects such as the Maison de l'Utopie in Gif-sur-Yvette, perched on stilts above a marsh. This was followed by commissions for IBM: a social center in Montpellier, a Test center and a tower in La Défense. Here again, Held favors integration into the landscape, the use of local materials and a sober yet powerful architectural style.

Greece as a testing ground

In 1989, Marc Held settled on the Greek island of Skópelos, where he built sixteen houses inspired by vernacular architecture. Working with local craftsmen, he developed an approach based on context, materials and time. In 2024, he designed a school in Senegal, built from bio-sourced materials: a return to his pedagogical roots and his commitment to the environment.
