Tito Agnoli

Italian modernist architect and designer

Italian architect and designer Tito Agnoli (1931-2012 ) belongs to the generation that shaped the post-war revival of Italian design. Trained at the Politecnico di Milano, he worked early in his career alongside two major figures in architecture and design: Gio Ponti and Carlo de Carli. This proximity to the great masters of Italian modernism had a lasting influence on his approach to design, based on formal clarity, constructive intelligence and balanced proportions.

From the 1950s onwards, Tito Agnoli developed a prolific activity in industrial design, collaborating with several major Italian furniture manufacturers, including Arflex, Cinova, Lema, Matteo Grassi, Oluce and Poltrona Frau. His designs cover a wide field, from furniture to lighting, and reflect a great sensitivity to materials.

His work is distinguished by an approach that is both rigorous and elegant, where each line responds to a logic of use. Agnoli favors essential forms, often structured by an apparent construction that highlights the material.

In the 1960s, he produced several landmark pieces in Rattan for Italian publisher Bonacina 1889, a long-standing specialist in this material. Designs such as the P3 Lounge Chair and the P3S Reclining chair perfectly illustrate his ability to exploit the suppleness and lightness of Rattan to create fluid, architectural silhouettes.

Winner of several Compasso d'Oro awards and honored at Chicago's NeoCon, Tito Agnoli's work spans the decades with its modernity intact. Even today, his creations continue to inspire design enthusiasts and editors alike, seduced by their timeless elegance and remarkable constructive intelligence.
