Flos lighting products double up as true works of art

All you need in order to add light to any home are straightforward bulbs in the ceiling. However, on their own these are incapable of fulfilling our aesthetic and functional needs. In order to ensure that the light shines exactly where it is supposed to, a lamp needs a shade. Desk lamps focus their light on work tables whereas floor lamps positioned next to sofas help us to read. Mood lighting can create a cosy atmosphere in living spaces. However, lamps can be a lot more: designer items such as Flos lamps are just as much skilfully crafted sculptures as they are everyday functional objects. In terms of their design, Flos lamps draw on the bulb itself and are therefore always functional. Their unusual design ensures that they stand out as works of art. Flos lamps are therefore designer lamp classics.

Flos lamps – design based on family tradition

Italian brand Flos was founded in 1962. In 1963, Sergio Gandini took over at the helm of the company which is now run by his son Piero Gandini. The name “Flos” is Latin for “flower” and, just as flowers need light in order to survive, Flos lamps are designed to improve our quality of life. The designers combine manual craftsmanship with mass-production technology to create Flos lamps in symbolic shapes. Flos lamps are not just functional objects but expressions of contemporary style. Technology is enhanced through emotions and poetry, thus creating unique objects.

Flos lamps: old and new design classics

More than 50 years on since production started, many Flos lamps are considered world-famous design classics and have been for a while now. However, more recent creations are also already deemed to be successful designs:

  1. Probably the most famous bestseller ever launched by Flos is the Arco floor lamp by the designer Achille Castiglioni. With its spherical lampshade suspended at the end of a long steel arch, anchored in a base made from white Carrara marble, this Flos lamp is a truly iconic piece.
  2. Many Flos lamps feature playful pop-art elements. One such example is the classic Snoopy by designers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. A black metal lampshade sits on a white marble stand evoking the image of the famous comic-strip beagle Snoopy.
  3. The Skygarden pendant by designer Marcel Wanders is well on its way to becoming a modern classic. This lampshade, made from glossy aluminium, is covered in plaster on the inside which features a surprising relief of flower garlands.
  4. The sculptural Superloon floor lamp by legendary designer Jasper Morrison and the Arrangements collection by Michael Anastassiades, the components of which are not just light sources but light installations, have particular artistic value.

Whether or not they are already considered to be design classics, Flos lamps are a striking and valuable addition to any living space or workspace. You can own your very own Flos lamp by ordering these unique and wonderful pieces from Made in Design!
