The Italian, Gino Sarfatti (1912 – 1985) is one of the greatest light designers of the 20th century. Founder of the famous "Arteluce" light company, he was one of the first designers to take an interest in new lighting functions. Sarfatti has done away with the boundaries between the practical and decorative aspect of lights, creating, as such, new types of lights. Created in 1958, the 2097 pendant from Gino Sarfatti is an iconic piece of 20th century design. This light revisits traditional chandeliers to offer an original, ultra-modern shape. The 2097 pendant offers the perfect balance between the emphasis of traditional baroque chandeliers and the minimalist style of the 50s, embellished with a touch of industrial aesthetics. The metal structure is made up of multiple spokes of different lengths, placed around a large central cylinder. On the end of the shelves, black Bakelite mounts support the myriad of frosted glass bulbs (30 LED bulbs included). Sarfatti made an aesthetic choice that was daring for the period: unlike traditional chandeliers, he decided to leave electrical wires and Bakelite mounts showing. The clean metal structure is therefore covered in cables which create an aesthetic jumble in the space. The cables appear to evolve and grow like creepers, giving the light an organic aspect. A prolific designer, Sarfatti designed over 600 lamp models. All throughout his career, he has sought to use new materials, create new forms and design new lighting technologies. Still in production today, this iconic light from Sarfatti has still got its modern touch. This large chandelier draws the gaze and majestically decorates large spaces.
