The future is taking shape at Kartell… A pioneer and visionary, renowned designer Philippe Starck continues to innovate: he has created the first armchair co-designed by artificial intelligence. To design it, Starck turned to Autodesk, an American company specializing in 3D design software.
To design the A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) chair, Philippe Starck, Autodesk, and Kartell posed a single crucial question to Dreamcatcher (the generative design software developed by Autodesk): “Could you provide support for our bodies using a minimum of material and energy?” Without culture, memories, or outside influence, the software responded solely with intelligence—its “artificial” intelligence.
A.I. is the first chair designed outside of our brains, outside of our habitual ways of thinking.
Human creative thought and artificial intelligence have thus merged to design a chair entirely developed by an algorithm that meets the original requirements: to create, with as little material and energy as possible, a comfortable, sturdy seat that conforms to the aesthetic standards of the Kartell collections.
The A.I. chair is the result of a collaboration between artificial intelligence and human intelligence, defined by Starck himself as “natural intelligence.”
Autodesk stated that the design process using artificial intelligence software was reminiscent of “a child’s learning process.” Starck describes this process as very similar to a conversation between two people.
“Why do all chairs look the same? How can we create a chair with a structurally different design? At one point, I needed to open a new door…” explains Philippe Starck regarding the origins of the A.I. Chair project.
This collaboration between human and artificial intelligence has demonstrated that artificial intelligence can support a designer’s work by calculating the optimal responses to a concept for a form.
The A.I. chair symbolizes designer Philippe Starck’s experimental approach to design and his commitment to sustainability.
“Coming from elsewhere, a new world is now opening up to us. An unlimited world…” concluded Starck. There is no doubt that the A.I. Chair marks a turning point for the future of design.
Mark Davis, Director of Design Futures at Autodesk, said: “Working with Starck and Kartell has been a true source of inspiration. The opportunity to understand their design philosophy and problem-solving approach is invaluable to our team as we reflect on the future of manufacturing. This is a research collaboration at the pinnacle of industrial design, which has yielded one of the most creative results we’ve ever sought to achieve with generative design. Through a collaborative relationship with artificial intelligence, humans will see their expertise in design and engineering amplified, thereby increasing their capacity for innovation and productivity.”
Continuing its technological research, Kartell keeps innovating to select new materials that are ever more high-performance and environmentally friendly. The A.I. armchair is made from 100% recycled thermoplastic technopolymer sourced from industrial waste. With this material, Kartell is blazing a new trail in environmental sustainability by using recycled materials while ridding the environment of waste that is transformed back into raw material, thereby creating a virtuous cycle of the circular economy.
Philippe Starck’s IA Armchair: When Design Enters a New Era
The IA Armchair by Philippe Starck redefines the codes of contemporary furniture. Philippe Starck conceived this project in collaboration with Kartell and Autodesk, a 3D software company, to explore a new way of creating. To do so, the team gave the generative design software Dreamcatcher a simple task: to design a comfortable, sturdy, and aesthetically pleasing chair using as little material as possible.
Thus, this AI-generated armchair by Philippe Starck embodies the convergence of human creativity and artificial intelligence. Its organic, fluid, and innovative design opens a new chapter in the history of design. Furthermore, its black finish enhances its sculptural appeal and blends seamlessly into any contemporary interior.
A Revolutionary and Iconic AI-Designed Armchair
The A.I. project addresses a fundamental question: How can we create a unique chair without replicating conventional designs? Thanks to this approach, the AI-designed armchair features a one-of-a-kind silhouette that immediately catches the eye.
Furthermore, its openwork lines represent a true technical feat. The result combines visual lightness, durability, and comfort. You are therefore choosing an innovative piece that symbolizes the future of design while maintaining Kartell’s signature aesthetic standards.
The A.I. chair is thus the result of a collaboration between artificial intelligence and human intelligence, defined by Starck himself as “natural intelligence.”

A responsible creation that combines innovation and sustainability
The AI armchair isn’t just innovative in its design. Kartell also manufactured it from 100% recycled thermoplastic technopolymer sourced from industrial waste.
As a result, this armchair is part of a concrete circular economy approach. Recovered materials are given a new purpose. Furthermore, the optimization of the structure minimizes resource use right from the design phase. You therefore enjoy furniture that combines performance, environmental consciousness, and a vision for the future.
The Power of Black for an Elegant and Timeless Presence
This black version particularly highlights the armchair’s complex geometry. Indeed, the color accentuates every curve and reveals the full richness of its generative design.
As a result, the armchair fits seamlessly into a contemporary living room, a designer office, or a reception area. Its deep black adds character while remaining easy to pair with other materials and colors in your Decoration.
Available in other color options, you can order Starck’s AI chair in a variety of colors: black, green, orange, white, Titan grey, metallic grey, earth, petrol blue, mocha, or bronze.
A collector’s item for design enthusiasts
With A.I., Philippe Starck has created a work that transcends mere everyday use. This armchair represents a historic moment in the evolution of contemporary furniture. Indeed, it is one of the first major creations to emerge from a dialogue between a designer and artificial intelligence.
Moreover, its fascinating story enhances its appeal. You are investing in an iconic piece that reflects the transformations in design and creative technologies. The AI Chair is thus highly representative of our era—an icon of the 2020s...
