Alvar Aalto (1898 - 1976) is one of Finland's most famous architects and designers. Nicknamed the "Beehive", the A331 Pendant is one of Alvar Aalto's most popular lighting fixtures. Beautiful even when switched off, Pendant A331 was designed in 1953 for Finland's Jyväskylä University. Equally at home in private and public spaces, the Hive diffuses a warm, comfortable light that shines mainly downwards, but also upwards, as well as onto the lamp itself.
Its ingenious construction is based on the superimposition of solid metal strips alternating with perforated metal rings. This construction is reminiscent of the work of Poul Henningsen, a friend of Aalto.
