The Bubble pendant collection was designed in 1947 by George Nelson (1908 - 1986), an influential designer of the mid-20th-century modern movement in the USA.

To create the Bubble collection, Nelson was inspired by Swedish Silk-covered pendant lights he wished to acquire for his Desk. He fell completely under the spell of their avant-garde aesthetic, but was put off by their price.
Swedish Designit consisted of a silk covering that was very difficult to manufacture: they had to cut out cups before sewing them onto a metal frame. But no matter, I wanted one at all costs," wrote Nelson.
Inventive and ingenious, Nelson decided to make a Lamp by spraying a steel frame with a plastic spray resin, an innovative technique developed at the time by the U.S. Army. It took just two days to design the first prototype. Once the technique had been perfected, Nelson created a set of spherical shapes that were simple, natural and organic.
The Lampshade of the Bubble Pendant is made of translucent Polymer canvas stretched over a thin steel frame. Transparent, the frame forms delicate geometric patterns, either criss-crossed or vertical. The pure, original presence of Bubble Pendant lights is a feature of any space. These soft, evanescent forms produce a warm, diffused light.
