Serax Carte Blanche Candle stick: From Cardboard to China
With the Carte Blanche candle stick, Dutch designer Annebet Philips transforms a simple model-making exercise into a true decorative object. Her starting point was a prototype made from folded and cut cardboard. Serax then transposed the folds, facets, and irregularities onto China, deliberately preserving the spontaneous look of the original model.
Available in three heights—Small (H 11.5 cm), Medium (H 15.5 cm), and Large (H 20.8 cm)—this white porcelain candle stick accommodates a long candle (not included). The different sizes can be used individually or combined to create a graphic arrangement with varying heights.
A sketch brought to life
The black outlines are hand-painted and follow the contours of the China. They accentuate the forms and give the candle stick the look of a three-dimensional drawing, almost as if it had come straight out of a sketchbook. This deliberately naive and playful style gives the Carte Blanche collection its instantly recognizable character.
The collection’s name also evokes the beginning of the creative process, when the page is still white and all possibilities remain open. This philosophy explains the apparent spontaneity of these forms.
Which Carte Blanche candle stick size should you choose?
The Small size, H 11.5 cm, fits easily on a table or shelf. The Medium size, H 15.5 cm, has a more prominent presence, while the Large size, H 20.8 cm, creates a more pronounced vertical accent. Based in Amsterdam, Annebet Philips holds a master’s degree in Industrial Design Engineering from TU Delft. Her work is characterized by deliberately naive shapes and hand-drawn contours. She has collaborated with Seletti, Mogg, Tonone, and Tommy Hilfiger, among others.
