Cesel Water Glass: Chiseled Design Reimagined by Patricia Urquiola
With Cesel, Patricia Urquiola transforms the water glass into a true table centerpiece. Its slender silhouette, measuring Ø 7.5 x H 13.4 cm, is brought to life by an irregular texture inspired by traditional chiseling. The transparent material catches the light, creating shifting reflections and giving the glass an almost sculptural presence. Made from food-safe recycled PMMA, Cesel combines the expressiveness of a handcrafted gesture with the precision of contemporary production.
A texture that brings the material to life
The name Cesel refers to chiseling, a decorative technique historically associated with metalwork. Patricia Urquiola draws on the rhythm of the incisions and the visual vibrancy of this technique to transpose them into a transparent material. The glass’s surface thus becomes dynamic, almost in motion, creating an interplay of depth that shifts with the light and the beverage served.
This craftsmanship gives the glass an instantly recognizable personality. The small visual irregularities create a subtle balance between industrial precision and the evocation of artisanal craftsmanship, while the transparency preserves all the lightness expected of a table glass.
Four colors to set the table
Cesel is available in clear, green, blue, and amber. Each color transforms the perception of the glass’s texture and reflections. The clear version offers a luminous, crystalline appearance. Green adds a botanical touch, blue accentuates depth, while amber instantly warms up the table.
The different shades can be used as a coordinated set or mixed to create a more free-form composition. Paired with the Carafe and Tray from the Cesel collection, they form a graphic table setting where color, transparency, and texture become integral elements of the decor.
Is the Cesel glass suitable for everyday use?
Yes. The Cesel water glass is made from Recycled PMMA that is food-safe and dishwasher-safe. It thus combines a highly refined aesthetic with the ease of care required for regular use. It is not microwave-safe.
What is the purpose of the relief patterns on Cesel glassware?
The relief patterns give the glass its unique character while enhancing the play of light. They capture reflections, break up the transparency, and cause the glass’s appearance to change depending on its contents and surroundings. Every movement of the hand or shift in light thus reveals a new interpretation of the material.
Can you mix different Cesel colors?
Yes. The clear, green, blue, and amber versions were designed to work both individually and as a set. Mixing the colors adds more rhythm to the table, while a monochromatic arrangement places greater emphasis on the texture and the play of transparency.
With Cesel, Patricia Urquiola gives the simple water glass a more expressive dimension. An everyday object that plays with light, color, and material to make every table setting a more vibrant composition.
