With the Cézanne table lamp, Marie Michielssen has designed a light fixture for Serax that catches the eye whether it’s on or off. Its slender, conical base meets a wide, domed, overhanging lampshade, creating an organic silhouette reminiscent of a mushroom. A familiar, almost natural shape, transformed here into a true sculptural object. Standing 40 cm tall with a diameter of 30 cm, Cézanne boasts generous proportions without becoming imposing. Its Ochre color and enamelled sandstone further enhance the warmth of its presence.
When Ceramics Become Sculpture
The Cézanne is part of Marie Michielssen’s highly personal universe, where geometric shapes and organic forms come together. A Belgian designer trained in graphic arts, she has been working with Serax for over twenty-five years and favors an intuitive approach to design, rooted in freehand drawing and experimentation with materials.
Here, the material plays a key role in defining the lamp’s character. The enamelled sandstone base has an almost artisanal quality, while the very full lampshade seems to float above it. The overall design plays on the contrast between vertical lines and soft curves. Whether on or off, the Cézanne retains a strong decorative presence.
Where to place a Cézanne table lamp?
The Cézanne lamp looks particularly good on a console, a dresser, or an end table. Its 30-cm diameter requires a surface deep enough to allow its wide lampshade to “breathe.” It can also complement a sofa in the living room or serve as an expressive bedside lamp in a bedroom with spacious bedside tables.
Is the Cézanne lamp suitable as a Desk lamp?
The Cézanne is first and foremost a decorative table lamp rather than a technical work lamp.
