Componibili New Big High: An Icon of Italian Design Takes on a New Scale

With Componibili New Big High, Kartell adds a new dimension to one of the most famous pieces of Italian design. Created in 1968 by Anna Castelli Ferrieri, the Componibili retains its cylindrical silhouette and instantly recognizable sliding doors, but now gains both height and width. Measuring Ø 42 x H 76.5 cm, this new format has a more commanding presence and features two large storage compartments. A bold evolution that modernizes the model’s functionality without compromising its identity.

Over fifty years of design history

When Anna Castelli Ferrieri conceived the Componibili in the late 1960s, Plastic opened up a new realm of experimentation for Italian designers. An architect and pioneer of industrial design, she created a compact, functional, and resolutely modern piece of furniture, designed to complement new lifestyles.

Its rounded shape, sliding storage system, and innovative use of plastic quickly made it an iconic piece for Kartell. More than half a century after its creation, the Componibili remains instantly recognizable. Its significance in the history of design is underscored by its presence in the collections of major institutions, notably the MoMA in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

New Big High: The Componibili Thinks Bigger

This New Big High version does more than just gain height. Its 42-cm diameter also gives it a wider seat than that of the classic Componibili. Its more generous proportions enhance its presence in the room and increase its storage capacity.

The two large stacked compartments are concealed behind the famous sliding doors that follow the curve of the piece. When closed, they preserve its perfectly cylindrical silhouette. Crafted from solution-dyed ABS, the New Big High retains the smooth, uniform finish that has always been a hallmark of the collection.

Where should you place the Componibili New Big High?

Thanks to its more generous size, the Componibili New Big High can serve as a true supplementary storage unit. In a bedroom, it fits perfectly next to the bed or in a dressing room. In a living room, it holds books, accessories, or everyday items. In a bathroom, its two large compartments help organize linens and personal care products. It’s also suitable for outdoor use.

What can you store in its two compartments?

The New Big High size offers more space than the more compact classic versions. Its two large storage compartments can hold books, linens, accessories, toiletries, or items you’d rather keep out of sight. The sliding doors help maintain a clean, sleek look when the unit is closed.

Can the Componibili New Big High be moved easily?

Yes. A set of four casters is available separately to make the unit more mobile. This option makes it easier to move the Componibili as needed and enhances the versatility that has defined the collection since its inception.

Which color should you choose?

The Componibili New Big High comes in white, blue, burgundy, dove grey, orange, and green. White and dove grey highlight the purity of its lines. The orange, green, and blue versions are more in line with the pop spirit of 1960s Italian design. Burgundy, on the other hand, lends a deeper, more sophisticated presence.

Choosing the Componibili New Big High means bringing much more than just storage into your home. It means embracing a design icon born in 1968, now reinterpreted in more generous proportions to meet contemporary needs without losing what has made it a success for over fifty years.
