An icon of modular design since 1969
By the end of the 1960s, industrial design was undergoing a veritable revolution. The rise of Plastic materials, driven by new molding techniques and a more democratic approach to furniture, paved the way for bold, accessible and functional creations. In 1969, Anna Castelli Ferrieri, architect and designer, co-founder of Kartell alongside her husband Giulio Castelli, fully embraced this movement by designing the Componibili.
A manifesto of democratic, modular design
The Componibili is much more than just a piece of furniture: it embodies a philosophy. At a time when domestic furniture must adapt to new urban lifestyles, it responds to a quest for flexibility and space optimization. Its design is based on a stackable cylindrical construction, offering unprecedented modularity. Thanks to a system of integrated circular runners, each Unit can be assembled without constraint, offering a scalable, customizable storage solution.
With this approach, Anna Castelli Ferrieri breaks away from traditional solid furniture and proposes a functional, playful and accessible design. Her work is part of the radical Italian design movement, which challenges the established norms of bourgeois furniture by advocating innovation, color and lightness of form.
An iconic piece celebrated by museums
The Componibili was an immediate success, becoming a contemporary furniture staple. Its sober, uncluttered aesthetic appealed to design enthusiasts and interior architecture professionals alike. Its impact was such that it became part of the permanent collections of the most prestigious institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. These distinctions testify to its major role in the history of industrial design and its status as a timeless classic.
Versatility and timelessness: a contemporary design essential
Beyond its historical heritage, Componibili is perfectly adapted to today's needs. Its compact size means it can fit into any room:
Bedside table in a minimalist bedroom,
Occasional furniture in a contemporary living room,
Storage space in a streamlined bathroom,
Modular storage unit in a Desk or hallway.
Available in a palette of sophisticated colors - Burgundy, Turtledove grey, Sky blue, Mauve and Orange - it adapts to the most demanding interiors while retaining its pop, functional DNA.
Why choose Kartell's Componibili?
Investing in the Componibili means choosing a piece of furniture that transcends trends. Its emblematic design, conceived over fifty years ago, remains astonishingly modern. It perfectly illustrates the fusion of technological innovation and timeless aesthetics.
A flagship piece of modular furniture, celebrated for its flexibility and adaptability, the Componibili continues to seduce designers and enlightened enthusiasts alike. With this cult piece, Kartell proves once again that Italian design knows how to combine functionality, elegance and ingenuity.

Componibili Storage plastic material black / Matt version - 2 drawers - H 40 cm - Kartell
I already have a gloss white 2 Componibili 2 drawer version purchased from Made In Design some years ago. A classic design, this time in matt black which really matches the aesthetics in the room I wanted them for, perfect!
