With the Contra floor lamp, Jamie Wolfond transforms a mechanical principle into a true design experience. Conceived as a large, off-center light fixture, it combines the presence of a pendant light with the freedom of a floor lamp. Its 256 cm-long arm is height-adjustable to suit your needs, creating lighting that is as functional as it is architectural.
A sculptural line in motion
The Contra’s uniqueness lies in its counterweight mechanism. A slight movement of the counterweight shifts the arm’s center of balance and, consequently, its position. Physics is no longer hidden behind a friction-based system; it becomes visible and plays a full role in the lamp’s functionality. This approach reflects the philosophy of Toronto-based designer Jamie Wolfond, whose work is rooted in the observation of materials and hands-on experimentation.
The elegant curve of the painted steel arm traces a fluid line through the space. At its tip, the spun aluminium lampshade houses a PMMA diffuser that envelops the light source. The colored concrete base provides the necessary stability for this airy structure, while reinforcing its graphic character. The contrast between the slenderness of the arm, the volume of the lampshade, and the density of the base gives the Contra a striking presence without visually weighing down the room.
