Description
Virgil Abloh x Alessi... Virgil Abloh, the multidisciplinary American designer, who died prematurely in 2021, leaves behind a vast creative legacy that extends well beyond the world of fashion. Virgil Abloh was a DJ, architect, artist and designer who founded the brand Off-White before joining the creative department at Louis Vuitton's menswear collections, becoming the first Afro-American artistic director of the French fashion house. Virgil Abloh challenged the traditional notions of luxury with his signature street style, successfully gauging the public mood - a mood which he then reflected in his creations, straddling the worlds of fashion, music and art. Virgil Abloh also applied his creative prowess to the world of design. During Milan Design Week 2022, Alessi marked its 100th anniversary by revealing its first new project for the next century: a collection designed by Virgin Abloh. This collaboration between Abloh and Alessi, which offers a new take on traditional tableware, started more than one year earlier, when the designer contacted Alberto Alessi about working together. He then brought in his design studio, Alaska Alaska, to develop the collection based on a new vision of contemporary cutlery inspired by industrial objects. With his collection, Conversational Objects, Virgil Abloh celebrates the table as a genuine theatre for social interaction. Designed in 2021, this set of "utensils for the table," redolent of mechanical tools, help forge social bonds based around an enjoyable ritual. These user-friendly tools - in the literal sense of the term - are a useful conversation starter, helping build relationships and establish connections at mealtimes. The Conversational Objects cutlery set is made and screenprinted by hand in Italy. These industrial-style matt, stainless steel items of cutlery seem more relevant to the world of DIY than the world of tableware. With Conversational Objects, Virgil Abloh blurs the distinction between workshop tools - a feature typical of his work - and the end product, resulting in a formal yet poetic design. Visionary designer, Virgil Abloh, deconstructs the cutlery set, projecting it outside its normal context of use; in so doing he creates an industrial style object with an aesthetic that's closer to that of work tools than tableware, updating it with a fresh, modern look. Once again, Virgil Abloh demonstrates the extraordinary interdisciplinary nature of his designs, successfully establishing a dialogue between two seemingly very disparate worlds. The Conversational Objects cutlery set is aimed at individuals who are passionate about design and creativity and who view the act of dining as a opportunity for dialogue and growth. For individuals who think that objects should encourage conversation and sociability as well as serve their intended purpose.
