The creations of Finnish designer and pioneer Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914 - 1999) helped put Nordic design on the world map in the 1950s. His creations were acclaimed the world over. From 1951 to 1960, he received no less than six Gold medals at the Milan Triennale! The chairs he designed in the 1950s and 1960s, such as Domus, are highly prized at auction and can be found in a large number of Nordic and American houses. His undeniably functional work was partly influenced by Alvar Aalto, whom he admired.
Emblematic of Finnish design, the Domus chair is undoubtedly Tapiovaara's most famous creation. It was designed in 1946 for the Domus Academia student residence in Helsinki. Lightweight, stackable and versatile, the Domus chair was the first major international success of Finnish design. Sold in the United States under the name "Finnchair", its worldwide popularity earned it numerous awards, including the American Good Design Award, which Tapiovaara received in Chicago in 1950, and the Gold Medal at the Milan Triennale in 1951.
Made from Wood - the only material available in abundance in post-war Finland - it was designed to be a multi-purpose reading chair. By combining Solid wood and Plywood, Tapiovaara succeeded in creating an ergonomic chair perfectly suited to prolonged sitting.
Its short armrests, which contribute greatly to its distinctive look, provide astonishing comfort while allowing the Domus chair to be slid under a table for minimal bulk. Domus is a perfect chair near a dining table for eating, or near a desk for studying.
The Domus Chair was originally sold disassembled, in the manner of Alvar Aalto's furniture, hence the visible screws, an integral part of Tapiovaara's original design.
