Johan van Hengel translates the visual language of folded paper into a steel plate with clean lines. Its top tray, open compartment, and large drawer allow you to store, display, and keep essentials within easy reach. Above all, Folded isn’t limited to any single use: whether as a bedside table in the bedroom, a bar cart in the living room, a Dresser in the kitchen, or a crate next to the Desk, it moves and reinvents itself as needed.

From Folded Paper to Steel

Behind Folded’s apparent simplicity lies a true mastery of materials. Its steel components are laser-cut and then shaped to create the clean folds that define its silhouette. The powder-coated finish accentuates this geometric interplay and gives the piece its contemporary character.

The project emerged from a dialogue between Johan van Hengel and Muuto about the Folded shelving units. The designer wanted to extend their formal language to new types of furniture. The idea of a piece of furniture incorporating these folded forms gradually evolved into this Dresser. Like the shelves in the collection, Folded plays with what you choose to display or conceal thanks to its various storage spaces.

Small piece, many uses

With its compact dimensions of W 37.4 x D 37.2 x H 61.5 cm, Folded fits easily into various rooms. Its open compartment keeps books, magazines, and small items within easy reach. The large steel drawer with a soft-close mechanism, meanwhile, holds the items you’d rather keep out of sight.

Its mobility makes all the difference. The four casters make it easy to move the mobile side table, while the four included interchangeable bases allow you to set it up as a stationary piece. The casters are made from 100% post-industrial recycled plastic. The casters, bases, and drawer can also be removed.
