G320 Wall Light by Pierre Guariche: Light Through Metal
Created in 1954 by Pierre Guariche and now reissued by Sammode, the G320 wall light builds on the design of the G32 while adding an extra dimension of light. Its large, perforated, curved steel reflector conceals the light sources while allowing some of the light to filter through the front panel. The result combines an indirect halo on the wall with soft light filtering through the metal. Two brass knobs add rhythm to this 70.4 cm-long graphic composition. Available in black or white, the G320 asserts a more expressive character while retaining the precision of the original design.
A luminous variation on the G32
The uniqueness of the G320 lies in its perforated finish. Whereas the G32 features a solid steel surface, the G320 reveals a multitude of points of light when the bulbs are turned on. This pattern transforms the front into a true filter and gives the fixture a more vibrant presence. The light no longer simply reflects off the wall; it also passes through the metal, creating an interplay between opacity and transparency that accentuates the architectural dimension of the wall light.
Modernism According to Pierre Guariche
The G320 embodies the functional and precise approach of Pierre Guariche, a leading figure in 20th-century French design. Its design relies on just a few elements, but each one plays a full role in its function. The curvature of the steel conceals the bulbs, while the perforations modulate the diffusion of light. Two brass details punctuate the front without disrupting the overall balance. Reissued in keeping with the 1954 model, this wall light retains a graphic style that complements both contemporary interiors and more modernist settings.
A More Graphic Light
The G320 combines two complementary lighting effects. Part of the light is reflected toward the wall to form an indirect halo above and below the Reflector. Another portion passes through the perforations in the Steel and directly illuminates the front panel. This effect is particularly noticeable in dimly lit environments, where the perforated pattern takes on an almost decorative quality. Installed alone, the wall light naturally draws the eye. When arranged in a group, multiple G320s can create a striking rhythmic light pattern along a long wall.
Where should you install the G320 wall light?
The G320 is particularly well-suited for a living room, bedroom, hallway, entryway, or dining area. Its 70.4 cm width allows it to adorn a wall with a strong graphic presence. When placed above a low cabinet, it becomes a decorative element in its own right. In a hallway or professional space, several wall lights lined up in a row create a succession of halos and points of light that help guide foot traffic. Equipped with a cable and a power plug, it can be installed near an electrical outlet without requiring a direct connection to a wall junction box.
Does the G320 wall light produce only indirect lighting?
No. The G320 combines indirect lighting with light filtered directly through its perforated front panel. The bulbs remain concealed behind the reflector, but their beams pass through the openings in the steel. The result is therefore visually brighter than with a solid facade, while maintaining soft diffusion and without any directly exposed light source.
Can the brightness of the G320 be adjusted?
Yes,the G320 wall light is equipped with a dimmer built directly into its power cable. This allows you to adjust the brightness provided you use compatible dimmable E27 bulbs. The G320 works with two LED bulbs E27, each with a maximum wattage of 11 W; bulbs are not included. This dimming feature allows you to adjust both the intensity of the halo on the wall and the lighting effect visible through the perforations.
How do you plug in the G320 wall light?
The G320 comes with a power cable with a plug. It plugs directly into an electrical outlet and therefore does not require a direct hardwired connection to the wall. The dimmer on the cable also allows you to easily adjust the light intensity. With an IP20 rating, it is designed for indoor use in dry rooms.
With its perforated front panel, Pierre Guariche’s G320 transforms light into a graphic element. When turned off, it captivates with the precision of its design and the regularity of its metal grid. When lit, it reveals its full character, causing the wall and the Reflector to shimmer with a dotted light pattern. This reissue demonstrates just how relevant Pierre Guariche’s work remains when it comes to harmonizing form, function, and light quality.
