Georgia Serax Large Table Lamp: Ceramics Become Sculpture
With Georgia, Marie Michielssen has designed a family of lamps for Serax, each model with its own distinct identity. More than just table lamps, these generously sized creations resemble true sculptures in enamelled sandstone, topped with a light-colored cotton lampshade. The shapes shift, the textures evolve, and the colors vary, but a common thread unites the collection: expressive, unapologetic, and deliberately imperfect ceramics. Georgia comes in five models ranging in height from 76.5 to 116 cm, designed to take center stage in any setting.
Marie Michielssen: Intuition at the Heart of Design
A Belgian designer and a key figure at Serax for over twenty years, Marie Michielssen has developed an instinctive approach to design inspired by art, architecture, and everyday objects. Trained in graphic design, she relies on drawing, Notepads, and handmade models to bring her creations to life.
Her work places great emphasis on materials, particularly Ceramics, Papier-mâché, and recycled materials. She highlights irregularities, tactile textures, and expressive forms, in a style that straddles the line between functional objects and Sculpture. For Serax, she applies this approach to furniture, tableware, accessories, and lighting.
Five sculptures, five silhouettes
Georgia’s strength lies in the diversity of her five designs. Each lamp appears to be conceived as a standalone piece rather than a mere variation on a single form. The enamelled sandstone bases can be slender, rounded, openwork, or punctuated with relief patterns. The colorful glazes highlight the surface irregularities and enhance the depth of the material.
The 116-cm model features a particularly tall and slender silhouette, with a blue-green base that extends upward toward a large cylindrical lampshade. The 97-cm version takes on a more totemic appearance, thanks to a light green base punctuated by several horizontal rings.
In contrast, the 76.5-cm version is shorter and wider. Its openwork blue-green base, featuring two large openings, evokes an abstract sculpture. The 95-cm red-orange model features a more bulbous and highly textured shape, while the 92.5-cm ochre version has a full, rounded silhouette, punctuated by raised patterns and medallions.
Why call it a large floor lamp rather than a table lamp?
Georgia’s dimensions far exceed those of a classic table lamp. The five models measure 116 cm, 97 cm, 76.5 cm, 95 cm, and 92.5 cm in height, respectively. Some versions also reach 50 cm in diameter or 51 cm in width.
These imposing proportions give the lamp a much more architectural role in the room. Georgia can frame a large piece of furniture and become a true focal point, rather than simply complementing a small side table.
Where should you place a large Georgia lamp?
Georgia naturally finds its place on a low cabinet, a large console, hallway furniture, or a living room piece of furniture. The most imposing versions require a sufficiently spacious surface so that their lampshade and base can “breathe” visually.
The tallest models can also work well in spacious areas, such as a large entryway, an open-concept living room, or a spacious bedroom. Conversely, their size makes them less suitable for a small bedside table or a standard Desk.
Which Georgia lamp should you choose?
The choice depends primarily on the available space and the desired decorative effect. The Ø 35 × H 116 cm version emphasizes verticality. The Ø 35 × H 97 cm model offers a more compact and rhythmic silhouette. The 51 × 32 × H 76.5 cm version, which is shorter and openwork, functions more like a horizontal Sculpture. The Ø 42 × H 95 cm model has a more substantial and expressive presence, while the Ø 50 × H 92.5 cm version is the most expansive.
Beyond its dimensions, each finish gives the lamp its own unique personality. The greens and blues highlight the depth of the glazes, while the red-orange and ochre tones accentuate the warm, decorative character of the ceramic.
How can you incorporate an enamelled sandstone lamp into your interior?
A large enamelled sandstone lamp like Georgia can become the focal point of a relatively understated arrangement. The light-colored cotton lampshades balance the expressiveness of the bases and make it easy to pair the lamp with natural materials such as wood, linen, stone, or wool.
In a very minimalist contemporary interior, Georgia adds texture and a more artisanal feel. In an eclectic or colorful decoration, on the other hand, it can reinforce a more expressive aesthetic. The key is to give it enough space so that its silhouette and sculptural details can truly shine.
With Georgia, Marie Michielssen has created not so much a uniform series as a veritable gallery of ceramic sculptures. Each lamp has its own personality, while the enamelled sandstone, generous proportions, and understated lampshades create an overall sense of cohesion. These pieces are designed to lend as much character to a space as a work of art.
