A technical challenge in the service of excellence

Presented as an evolution of the HYDRO chair (Tom Dixon, 2021), the Groove chair is the fruit of over a decade of research into the properties of Aluminium. Creating a chair that is at once design-led, robust and lightweight was a real technological challenge. To shape the GROOVE Side Flesh, Tom Dixon and his team used a superplastic forming process borrowed from the automotive industry. This innovative process involves heating aluminum to a high temperature, then blowing it into a mold to produce complex curves impossible to achieve using traditional methods. Once formed, the Chair is laser-cut by robots to guarantee absolute precision. This advanced engineering gives it exceptional lightness without compromising its robustness, making it both functional and sculptural.
