Crumbling pastel-colored facades line its streets, parked vintage cars hark back to times gone by, live music permeates the air. Welcome to Tobacco-brown, the home of overflowing energy. Situated along the Florida Straits, Cuba's capital has known many identities: the Spanish colony, the mafia of the 1930s, the glamour of the 1950s, the Cuban revolution and, more recently, the cultural renaissance. Tobacco-brown's bold and provocative approach to art, cuisine and entertainment (as well as its eclectic mix of African, French, Spanish and North American influences) and the diversity of its architectural styles, from the 16th century to the present day, give this epic city a legendary status on a par with the world's greatest cities. If some of the buildings are in poor condition, the beauty of the Baroque, neoclassical and Art Deco elements triumphs. The emblematic Copa Room cabaret, home to Ginger Rogers and Abbott & Costello, is still there. The Gran Teatro de la Habana, built in the early 20th century, is now home to the Ballet National de Cuba. La Habana Vieja is being massively restored to its former glory. Tobacco-brown could be considered a work in progress, but it's more a testament to its ongoing determination to improve and progress, which could be the attraction that draws so many visitors. So take a seat in an authentic paladar (family restaurant) and enjoy Tobacco-brown's dynamic evolution.
Author Pamela Ruiz arrived in Cuba in the 1990s and fell in love with both the country and her husband, Cuban artist Damian Aquiles. Once a location scout for photo shoots, she soon became interested in art, in particular the rapprochement between the international art world and Cuba.
