Serax Illumina 01 Table lamp: Material Becomes Architecture

With Illumina 01, Claire Horsten has designed a table lamp for Serax that is stripped down to the essentials. Two rectangular volumes are stacked in a highly graphic, almost monolithic composition. The design is deliberately simple, but the material lends it all its richness. Crafted from matte sandstone, the lamp is distinguished by a surface entirely covered in fine striations that subtly catch the light. Measuring 18 × 18 × H 30 cm, Illumina 01 remains compact and easy to incorporate into any space, while still making a strong statement. It is available in Sand and White, among other colors.

Claire Horsten: Ceramics as a Sensitive Language

Belgian designer and ceramicist Claire Horsten holds a master’s degree in interior architecture. Her work lies at the intersection of object design, sculpture, and interior design. Ceramics play a central role in her practice, with a particular focus on the material itself, its irregularities, and the simplicity of its forms. Her creations seek a balance between presence, understated elegance, and tactile richness.

An Almost Textile-Like Texture

The uniqueness of Illumina 01 lies as much in its volume as in its surface. Sandstone is not smooth. It is crisscrossed by fine parallel striations that cover the various faces of the light fixture and extend all the way to the edges. Their regularity varies slightly, revealing small irregularities and nuances that lend the material a living quality.

This texture completely transforms the perception of sandstone. Depending on the orientation of the lines and the light, the surface can appear at times mineral-like, at other times almost textile-like. The striations add rhythm to the highly geometric forms and bring an unexpected depth to this deliberately minimalist silhouette.

Where should you place a small 30-cm table lamp?

With a height of 30 cm and a base measuring 18 × 18 cm, Illumina 01 is particularly well-suited for a bedside table, a console table, a small chest of drawers, a deep shelf, or an end table. Its compact size allows it to fit into small spaces without losing its decorative impact.
