Serax Illumina 03 Table Lamp: Geometry Takes Shape

With Illumina 03, Claire Horsten has designed a table lamp for Serax featuring clean lines and highly architectural proportions. The lamp combines two stacked rectangular volumes, with a wider upper section that appears to float above a compact base. Crafted entirely from grooved white sandstone, the lamp plays with texture, shadows, and the precision of its geometry. Measuring 30.5 × 12.5 × H 26 cm, it features a low, horizontal profile that allows it to fit easily on a piece of furniture while maintaining a strong decorative presence.

Claire Horsten: Ceramics as a Sensitive Language

A Belgian designer and ceramicist, Claire Horsten holds a master’s degree in interior architecture. Her work lies at the intersection of object design, Sculpture, and interior design. Ceramics play a central role in her practice. She favors clean lines and pays particular attention to the material, its irregularities, and the craftsmanship involved. Her creations thus seek a balance between simplicity, presence, and tactile richness.

A striated texture with an almost Textile-like quality

The uniqueness of Illumina 03 lies largely in its surface. The sandstone is crisscrossed by fine parallel striations that cover the various faces and extend to the edges. The texture remains matte and slightly irregular, revealing small imperfections and variations that lend the material greater depth.

These very fine lines alter the perception of volume depending on the light. They accentuate the vertical or horizontal orientation of the faces, subtly catch the shadows, and give the sandstone an almost Textile-like appearance. This contrast between a very strict geometry and a visually vibrant material prevents the piece from appearing too cold or too smooth.

Where should you place a rectangular coffee table lamp?

At 26 cm tall, Illumina 03 is particularly well-suited for a console table, a Chest of drawers, a low cabinet, an end table, or a shelf that’s deep enough. Its 30.5 cm width gives it more visual presence than a small vertical lamp, while still maintaining a reasonable footprint.

Its low profile works particularly well in a horizontal arrangement, for example next to books, a Vase, or a sculptural object. It can also balance a long piece of furniture without creating too much visual height.

In what kind of interior should you incorporate Illumina 03?

Its white finish and geometric design blend easily into contemporary, minimalist, or cozier interiors. The texture of the white sandstone allows it to blend naturally with wood, stone, travertine, linen, or more raw surfaces. On a dark piece of furniture, the white clearly highlights the silhouette. On a light surface, it’s mainly the streaks and the play of shadows that give the lamp its structure.

How does Illumina 03 differ from a traditional lamp?

Illumina 03 stands out for its almost architectural approach to lighting design. Here, the object’s presence stems primarily from the combination of volumes and surface treatment. The lamp is perceived as much as a decorative element as it is a light fixture, with a form strong enough to visually define a piece of furniture even when it is turned off.

With Illumina 03, Claire Horsten transforms two basic volumes into a small sandstone structure. The finely striated texture brings the mat white to life and gives this rigorous silhouette a perceptible, tactile, and unique depth.
