Serax Illumina 04 Table lamp: Geometry Takes on a Softer Edge

With Illumina 04, Claire Horsten has designed a table lamp for Serax where geometric precision meets softer lines. The upper section features a rectangular shape with generously rounded corners—almost oval—resting on a compact base that echoes this same design language. Crafted from grooved Sandstone stoneware, the lamp exudes a sculptural presence while retaining a certain visual softness. Measuring 33 × 12.5 × H 29 cm, it features a compact, elongated shape that’s easy to place on a variety of furniture.

Claire Horsten: Ceramic as a Sensitive Language

A Belgian designer and ceramicist, Claire Horsten holds a master’s degree in interior architecture. Her work lies at the intersection of object design, sculpture, and interior design. Ceramics play a central role in her practice. She favors clean lines and pays particular attention to the material, its irregularities, and the craftsmanship involved. Her creations thus seek a balance between simplicity, presence, and tactile richness.

A striated material with an almost Textile-like appearance

The uniqueness of Illumina 04 lies largely in its surface treatment. The sandstone is crisscrossed by fine parallel striations that enliven the lamp’s various surfaces. The texture remains matte and mineral-like, with small irregularities and variations in hue that lend depth to the material.

These fine lines catch the light and subtly alter the perception of volume. On the Sand finish, they give the sandstone an almost Textile-like appearance, warmer than a perfectly smooth surface. The contrast between this pronounced texture and the rounded curves creates an object that is at once graphic, tactile, and serene.

Where should you place a 29-cm table lamp?

At 29 cm tall, Illumina 04 is particularly well-suited for a console table, a Chest of drawers, an end table, a low cabinet, or a shelf that’s deep enough. Its 33-cm width gives it a pronounced horizontal presence, while its depth of just 12.5 cm keeps it relatively compact.

It can thus add visual interest to a piece of furniture without creating too much visual height. Its size works particularly well in an arrangement with books, a Vase, or a few understated decorative objects.

What materials pair well with the Sand finish?

The Sable shade pairs naturally with warm, mineral-based materials. It works very well with light or dark wood, travertine, stone, linen, or wool. Its soft hue also creates a subtle contrast with black or metallic furniture.

In a very light interior, Illumina 04 primarily adds texture. In a darker setting, its Sand shade further highlights its rounded forms and striated texture.

How does Illumina 04 stand out from the other models in the collection?

Illumina 04 stands out with a softer, more rounded silhouette. While some models in the collection favor stricter, rectangular shapes, this version introduces curved angles that soften the geometric rigidity. The collection’s identity remains intact thanks to the ribbed sandstone, the compact design, and the object’s highly architectural approach.

With Illumina 04, Claire Horsten gives sandstone a presence that is both graphic and sensitive. The striations enliven the surface, the Sable finish warms the material, and the curves soften the geometry. A lamp conceived as much as an object of light as a small contemporary sculpture.
