Starck Squeezer: An Iconic Sculpture of Contemporary Design

Calling all collectors, design enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to rediscover the iconic figures of Italian design! The iconic Italian brand Alessi is celebrating its 100th anniversary with the “Alessi 100 Values Collection.” This collection celebrates the values that define the identity and practice of the “Dream Factory” (Fabbrica dei Sogni). A collection of surprising objects drawn from the Alessi Museum’s archives, featuring projects that have never been produced before, previously unseen versions of iconic pieces, and emerging icons. Twelve projects, each representing a different value, will be presented over the course of twelve months, from May 2021 to April 2022. The “Alessi 100 Values Collection” celebrates 100 years of research in the field of applied arts and the beginning of a new century of experimentation.

The eighth value highlighted by Alessi is Borderline: right on the border between the possible and the impossible lies Philippe Starck’s Juicy Salif Studio No. 3 citrus squeezer. A fascinating prototype of an Alessi classic, endowed with a strong sculptural presence.

Alberto Alessi explains: “Borderline: that fine line that separates the possible from the impossible. In design, it’s that line that marks the boundary between a project that will be understood, appreciated, and coveted, and one that will remain misunderstood and thus never find its audience. In reality, it’s a blurred line—one that cannot be grasped through market research. We can only guess where it lies by carefully applying our intuition and being willing to take a few risks. Working at the limits is the calling of an Italian design house like Alessi. Exploring the limits of what is possible, always seeking to go beyond them—or rather, to push them further—is our vision of progress and our contribution to the evolution of consumer society. Juicy Salif Studio No. 3: one of Alessi’s most iconic creations is precisely a good example of this kind of design that pushes the boundaries. Starck’s “Juicy Salif” citrus squeezer—a project that deliberately set out to push the boundaries—has nonetheless managed to win over the public, making it a true textbook example! Thanks primarily to the genius of its creator, but also to the care we took in developing the initial concept, this model has established itself and remains one of our bestsellers to this day. We have therefore decided to offer a limited-edition version of a “design study” created at the project’s outset, in which function seems to have completely given way to sculptural lines…’’

With Juicy Salif Studio No. 3, Philippe Starck’s iconic citrus squeezer is unveiled to the public in its original form. Sketched by the designer on a placemat in a pizzeria during a vacation on the island of Capraia in Tuscany, Juicy Salif has established itself as “the most controversial squeezer of the 20th century.” Whether likened to a spider, a sea monster, or a spaceship, it is an object that has captured the public’s imagination since its debut. Juicy Salif Studio No. 3 is a previously unseen version that reproduces one of the very first prototypes; its sculptural nature—which has always been at the heart of the fascination surrounding this enigmatic object—is here enhanced by the use of Bronze.

This piece is dedicated to all collectors of Philippe Starck’s most provocative creations and to enthusiasts of one-of-a-kind or limited-edition pieces who wish to build their own design gallery.

Philippe Starck: “Juicy Salif isn’t meant for squeezing lemons; its appeal lies in the images it evokes—the ability of this micro-sculpture to give free rein to our imagination. Some have even seen a phallic FORMA in it—something I must admit I hadn’t thought of. All it takes is for someone to ask, ‘What is that?’ and a conversation begins. It’s this very scenario that inspires me when I design objects as strange as this one.”
