Kaari Wall console table wood black / Wall desk - W 100 x D 45 cm

Imagined in 2015, the Kaari collection by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec marks the first collaboration between the famous French designers and Finnish brand Artek.

All the furniture in the Kaari collection (table, desk, shelf...) has in common a folded strip of steel that plays both a functional and aesthetic role. Inspired by Alvar Aalto's work with bent wood, the metal band has a light, fluid contour: it appears to have been drawn with a single pencil stroke.

The principle behind the Kaari collection ("Arc" in Finnish) is extremely simple: the tops of tables and shelves are supported by solid wood pieces clad in curved steel strips. The steel strips follow the contours of the wood, reinforcing the support while creating a linear, rhythmic silhouette. The bent steel strip provides a diagonal, bow-like support.

A true graphic signature of the collection, this hybrid wood/metal construction element serves as an angle for the shelves and as a reinforcement for the table legs.

Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec: ''Right from the start, we had the idea of creating a collection that would be linked to the ARTEK tradition, but based on our contemporary positioning. We pursued our exploration of material combinations and created Kaari, a novel constructive system based on a hybridization of Solid wood and steel strips. The system, originally designed for table legs, has been adapted to build desks and wall shelves, and can support a wide variety of different tops: small and large, round and rectangular, low and high.''

This wall console table can also be used as a desk, a dressing table in a bedroom, a bar or a deep shelf, depending on the height at which it is mounted. The console is supported by vertical wall brackets in Solid oak, with steel strips providing diagonal support. The interplay between the Steel strips and the vertical and horizontal elements creates a distinctive linear silhouette. The Tray is made of linoleum: an organic material based on vegetable oils, with a matte appearance and a warm, self-regenerating feel for micro-scratches.
