Description
A design legend relaunched at long last! The anti-conformist armchair, a pop icon of the 1960s and a symbol of freedom, is back in production. The Karelia armchair was designed in 1966 by designer Liisi Beckmann (1924 - 2004). Experimental and sculptural, this is one of the first frame-less chairs created, entirely made from polyurethane foam. The undulated surface was inspired by the heritage of the designer, the Republic of Karelia in Finland, laced with creeks and gulfs. This low foam seat with curving forms perfectly illustrates the metamorphosis experienced in the world of design in the 1960s. Far from the straight and sleek lines of contemporary furniture at the time, the design stepped away from post-war austerity to head towards a less rigid aesthetic that was more upbeat and relaxed. Karelia expresses the anti-conformity of the sixties and the quest for new comfort with furniture close to the ground. This foam seat doesn't have a rigid structure, so it can adapt to any user. In this relaunch, seventies vinyl has passed the relay onto a removable cover in colourful fabric, highlighting the armchair's curves. This bio-stretch, ultra-resistant fabric offers extraordinary technical performances: it perfectly matches the volumes of the seat without distorting. The comfort has also been improved thanks to the dual-density polyurethane foam padding and the slightly bigger proportions. You can combine two or more modules thanks to the hooks positioned on the legs to create a modular, undulated sofa.
