Lepid Bookcase, a design of lines by Patricia Urquiola
With the Lepid Bookcase, Patricia Urquiola blurs the lines between furniture and graphic design. Vertical lines soar at different heights, while horizontal shelves intersect them at various levels. Solid and void elements balance each other to create an open structure, almost as if drawn directly into the space. The eye moves freely between the elements, giving this bookcase a strong presence without creating visual bulk.
When Contours Define the Furniture
In the Lepid collection, the edge becomes the true protagonist of the design. Contrasting edges trace the various elements of the structure, creating a continuous line inspired by the spontaneity of freehand drawing. This way of highlighting the construction transforms each intersection into a graphic detail. The bookcase is thus perceived as a succession of lines, frames, and colored surfaces. Crafted from recycled wood fibre panels with a polyester lacquer finish, it also incorporates FSC-certified wood.
Where should you place a large graphic bookcase?
This designer bookcase naturally fits into a living room, a desk, or a large entryway. Measuring 116 cm wide and 32 cm deep, it makes the most of its vertical space while minimizing its footprint. Its open structure also allows the wall to remain visible between the shelves, which helps maintain a sense of space. It can hold books, decorative objects, or collectibles by making use of the different levels.
How can you decorate an open bookcase without overcrowding it?
An open bookcase looks best when you leave some empty space between the items. Lepid’s irregular layout lets you alternate between books, small lamps, vases, and sculptures while intentionally leaving some shelves clear. The varying heights naturally create several display areas and encourage you to build a composition rather than a uniform storage arrangement.
Which finish should you choose for the Lepid bookcase?
The Ivory version accentuates the structure’s visual lightness and particularly highlights its contours. The Burgundy finish adds more depth and a more sophisticated presence. The Mustard finish offers a brighter and more expressive interpretation of the design. In each finish, the contrast of the edges reinforces the bookcase’s geometric rhythm.
Does the Lepid bookcase need to be mounted on the wall?
Yes. The Lepid bookcase must be mounted on the wall to ensure proper installation given its vertical format. It is delivered unassembled with assembly instructions. Its assembly system includes recessed rails designed to combine structural strength with ease of assembly.
Lepid does more than simply occupy a wall. Its vertical and horizontal lines redefine the wall, creating a true showcase for the books and objects you choose to display on it.
