Night birds ... The collection of ''Linnut'' lamps (birds in Finnish) is the result of a collaboration between Magis and the prestigious Finnish brand Iittala. These lamps are inspired by the iconic "Birds" collection of blown glass birds, designed by Oiva Toikka and produced by Iittala since the 70s.Famous all over the world, these glass birds are considered true works of art. Born from the imagination of the great Finnish designer Oiva Toikka, these sculptures are the result of the know-how of glass craftsmen who fashion them by hand and blow them in the traditional way.The first Bird figurine appeared in 1972 and the collection has continued to grow ever since. Toikka has been prolific: over the last forty years, the designer has created more than four hundred figurines! Today, collectors around the world hunt down these little glass birds, fighting over the rarest models like ardent bird watchers.Magis reinterprets these iconic sculptures by transforming them into objects that are both decorative and functional with an ironic, pop touch. The birds of Oiva Toikka become rechargeable wireless lamps and soothe us with their attractive diffused light. These light sculptures faithfully reproduce their original design. They add their poetry throughout the house and light up space. Mobile and with no cables, these lamps can be taken out onto the terrace to light up a summer dinner, or placed in a child's room to provide a friendly glow during the night. Linnut can also perch in an entrance to welcome you home.Magis' Linnut lamps are the result of advanced materials research. Traditional blown glass has been replaced by roto-moulded polycarbonate. This moulding process combined with polycarbonate material produces an effect very similar to blown glass.Enrico Perin, Head of Development at Magis, explains: "Looking for new materials for roto-moulding, we came across polycarbonate and quickly realised that hardly any manufacturer in Italy was using this combination - if at all. This is surprising, given how remarkable polycarbonate material is in its transparency and colour effects. In fact, polycarbonate is so versatile that a transparent sheet can be applied to a second opaque sheet. By adding aggregates of different colours, the glossy surface can be given new patterns and shades - unique from one object to another. With polycarbonate, you can create an effect very similar to the rich finish typical of blown glass."To begin the "Linnut" collection, Magis and Toikka selected four of the most iconic birds from the collection: Sulo, Siiri, Kirassi and Palturi. Each bird has its own character and bears some traces of human nature.Oiva Toikka on Linnut: ''Finnish design is also about materiality: design always starts with the material itself. What you do with it is part of your own imagination. It could be a curious pigeon, a cheeky chick, a daft duck or a weird owl. With these illuminated birds, a little bit of Finland has landed in the renowned Italian design house of Magis. ‘’
