The creations of Finnish designer and pioneer Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914 - 1999) helped put Nordic design on the world map in the 1950s. His creations were acclaimed the world over. From 1951 to 1960, he received no less than six Gold medals at the Milan Triennale! The chairs he designed in the 1950s and 1960s, such as Mademoiselle, are highly prized at auction and can be found in a large number of Nordic and American houses. His undeniably functional work was partly influenced by Alvar Aalto, whom he admired.
Designed in 1956, the Mademoiselle armchair is a true classic of Scandinavian design. Its main qualities: comfort and lightness. The angle of inclination of the backrest and seat is optimal. The result is perfect comfort. To create its fluid lines, the designer drew inspiration from traditional Finnish slatted chairs, applying his own approach to modernist design. The high, slatted back contrasts strikingly with the soft, modern curves of the seat.
The Mademoiselle Armchair is made entirely from Solid birch, using an age-old construction method.
All ARTEK bentwood furniture is manufactured in the Turku factory in Finland, using local wood. They combine modern production methods with skilled craftsmanship and carefully selected materials.
