With Nizou, Bob Verhelst has designed a table lamp for Serax that deliberately blurs the line between lighting and sculpture. Crafted from powder coated steel, its compact silhouette combines geometric planes, clean-cut edges, and a curved upper section that give it an almost architectural presence. Bob Verhelst: Art, Scenography, and Design

A Belgian designer and artist, Bob Verhelst has developed a multidisciplinary practice that blends design, set design, fashion, and the visual arts. He has worked notably in theater costume design and museum set design, while also collaborating with brands such as Hermès, Cartier, and Viktor & Rolf. Serax cites the Bauhaus, Eileen Gray, and Vincenzo De Cotiis among his influences. When Light Reveals the Cutouts

Nizou’s distinctive feature is fully revealed once the light is turned on. Its metal structure partially encloses the light and features two opposing side openings. The light thus escapes from both sides of the lamp, creating two illuminated zones that highlight the cutouts in the silhouette.

This design transforms how the object is perceived. The solid and hollow areas become more distinct, while the light seems to emerge from within the lamp’s form.
