Original 315 Anglepoise, the Desk lamp designed for navigation
With its small polished aluminium reflector, black frame, and famous articulated mechanism, the Original 315 Anglepoise desk lamp has the look and feel of a true precision instrument. This reissue revives a model developed in the 1940s based on George Carwardine’s Original 1227. Originally designed to assist navigators in the dark, it now naturally finds its place on a desk, work table, or in a workshop. Its industrial aesthetic and highly directional lighting combine design history with everyday practicality.
From the chart table to the contemporary desk
The history of the Original 315 is closely tied to that of aviation. During World War II, “Project 315” adapted the famous Anglepoise Original 1227 lamp to illuminate the chart tables of navigators aboard long-range maritime patrol seaplanes. The goal at the time was very practical: to provide light precise enough to read a map during nighttime operations.
Today, Anglepoise has adapted this principle to create a lamp designed for contemporary interiors. The proportions have been adjusted, while the characteristic elements of the historic model remain instantly recognizable.
An industrial silhouette full of contrasts
The Navigation Edition plays on the interplay of silver and black. The small lampshade, made of polished and lacquered aluminium, captures the light and contrasts with the steel structure featuring a black satin finish. The black nickel fittings extend this technical aesthetic, while the cast-iron base clad in steel ensures the stability of the entire fixture. A twisted black textile cable completes its industrial character.
Beyond aesthetics, every element serves a functional purpose. The articulated arm allows the light source to be moved closer or farther away. The spring-balanced system, meanwhile, holds the lamp in the chosen position. It is precisely this visible mechanism—which has become iconic for Anglepoise—that gives the Original 315 its character as a functional lamp.
A Beam Designed for Precision
Another distinctive feature of this Navigation Edition is its lighting. It is equipped with a 7 W GU10 spotlight bulb(included), designed to produce a concentrated, directional beam. The light thus remains focused on the work area rather than diffused throughout the room. This feature directly echoes the model’s historical function, when the light was intended to illuminate a map in the dark without unnecessarily lighting up the rest of the cabin.
Is this lamp suitable for working or reading?
Yes. The Original 315 desk lamp is particularly well-suited for activities that require targeted lighting. Its 7 W GU10 bulb creates a precise beam, while its adjustable arm allows you to direct the light toward a book, a keyboard, a sketchbook, or a small work area. It is therefore equally suitable for reading, drawing, writing, or creative activities.
Where should I place the Original 315 desk lamp?
Its design is particularly well-suited for a desk, a workshop, or a workspace. With a maximum height of 66 cm from the base to the lampshade, it can illuminate a relatively large area while maintaining a compact base measuring 15 × 15 cm. It fits easily on a home desk, a console table converted into a workspace, or an architect’s table.
Is it easy to adjust the light’s direction?
Yes. The adjustable lampshade and articulated arm allow you to precisely adjust the position of the light source. The spring-balanced system helps keep the lamp stable once the adjustment is made. This adjustability is one of the Original 315’s main advantages for everyday use.
Is the Original 315 suitable for a small desk?
Yes. Despite the range of motion offered by its arm, its footprint on the tray remains limited thanks to its base measuring just 15 × 15 cm. Its lampshade measures 7 cm in diameter and 12 cm in height. It therefore provides effective task lighting without taking up too much desk space. Its 250 cm cable also offers plenty of flexibility for reaching a distant outlet.
More than eighty years after its design, the Original 315 Anglepoise remains as relevant as ever, embodying its original concept: placing light exactly where it’s needed. A design piece with a strong technical presence, it transforms the desk into a true workspace while showcasing Anglepoise’s instantly recognizable signature.
