PH 1/1 Piano Table Lamp, an icon reissued in 2026
Reissued in a limited edition, the PH 1/1 Piano brings renewed attention to a rare creation by Poul Henningsen designed in the early 1930s. A composer himself, the Danish designer created this lamp to meet the needs of pianists and provide them with precise, comfortable, and glare-free lighting. For this 2026 Limited Edition, Louis Poulsen reimagines the model in burnished brass and powdered Terracotta opal glass, while preserving the spirit of the original design.
A sculptural design conceived for light
The silhouette of the PH 1/1 Piano is distinguished by its long, curved base, whose design evokes a knot. At the back, a spherical element acts as a counterweight and contributes to the lamp’s visual balance. The articulated base allows the light to be directed as needed, with an adjustment range of 25° forward and 45° backward. This flexibility gives the lamp true versatility and now far exceeds its original use as a piano lamp.
In this 2026 version, the lamp has been slightly adapted to better suit contemporary uses. Louis Poulsen showcases it equally well on a desk, a bedside table, or a windowsill.
The PH System: Glare-Free Lighting
The PH 1/1 Piano is based on the famous PH system developed by Poul Henningsen. Its three stacked lampshades act as reflectors to direct the light while minimizing glare. The 2026 model features hand-blown opaline glass lampshades that are glossy on the outside and mat white, sandblasted on the inside. This design diffuses a soft, soothing, and visually comfortable light.
The PH collection emerged from Poul Henningsen’s research into softer, more comfortable lighting. This principle of three stacked lampshades has become one of the most recognizable hallmarks of his work and of 20th-century Danish lighting design.
Where should you place the PH 1/1 Piano lamp?
Today, the PH 1/1 Piano can be used far beyond the piano. Its size and adjustable base allow it to be placed on a desk, bedside table, or end table. Its downward-directed light is particularly well-suited for areas where you want soft yet focused lighting.
Measuring H 36.4 x W 41.7 cm with a lampshade diameter of Ø 16 cm, it maintains a striking presence without taking up too much space.
Is the PH 1/1 Piano lamp adjustable?
Yes. Its articulated base allows the lamp to be adjusted 45° backward and 25° forward. This adjustment makes it possible to move the light closer to or farther from the area to be illuminated and to more precisely adapt its orientation to the intended use.
The spherical counterweight located at the back of the arm helps balance the structure when the lamp is repositioned. This functional detail is also part of the model’s highly distinctive identity.
What bulb should be used with the PH 1/1 Piano?
The lamp works with a G9 LED bulb of up to 20 W. The bulb is not included. The switch is located on the Base, and the initials “PH” are engraved on its housing.
What makes this 2026 Limited Edition special?
