PH 3/3 Centenary Edition Pendant Light, 100 Years of PH Lighting
Created in 2026 to celebrate the centennial of the PH system, the PH 3/3 Centenary Edition pendant light pays homage to one of Poul Henningsen’s most iconic designs. Its three-lampshade design draws on the principle developed in 1926 to control light and minimize glare. Here, Louis Poulsen combines a structure and a ceiling rose in lacquered burnished brass with an Amber upper lampshade and two lower lampshades in white Opal Glass. A warm composition that highlights the heritage of this 2026 Limited Edition.
The PH System: A Century-Old Icon
Invented by Poul Henningsen in 1926, the PH system consists of three stacked lampshades whose proportions and curves allow for precise control of light diffusion. Building on this principle, the designer developed hundreds of luminaires and laid the groundwork for an approach to lighting in which light quality and visual comfort are inseparable.
The PH Centenary collection celebrates a century of this legacy. It brings together classic models and designs from the Louis Poulsen archives, reimagined with burnished brass and various combinations of white and coloured opal glass.
Blown glass in the Service of Light
The three lampshades are crafted from hand-blown opaline glass. The top element consists of four layers of Amber glass, while the two lower lampshades are formed of three layers of opaline white glass. All feature a glossy exterior and a mat, sanded white interior.
This design creates a warm upward glow while directing soft, diffused, and glare-free light downward. The pendant thus retains all the precise lighting characteristics that define the PH system.
A silhouette faithful to the original PH models
The PH 3/3 belongs to the so-called “full-size” models. Its upper lampshade measures approximately 30 cm and maintains a 3:2:1 proportion with the two lower elements. This geometry contributes as much to its visual identity as it does to the quality of light diffusion.
This edition also incorporates certain details from the original models used in 1926, notably the decorative knurled screws used to adjust the position of the light source. Combined with the dark brown textile cable and burnished brass, these elements enhance the vintage style of this contemporary reinterpretation.
Where should you install the PH 3/3 Centenary Edition pendant lamp?
The PH 3/3 is particularly well-suited for installation above a dining table, a Coffee table, or in any space where comfortable, controlled lighting is desired. Its design directs light primarily downward while allowing the Amber lampshade to diffuse a warm glow upward.
With a diameter of 28.5 cm and a height of 30.7 cm, it maintains compact proportions. Its cable, up to 400 cm long, offers great flexibility for adjusting the pendant height to suit the room’s layout.
What kind of light does the PH 3/3 pendant lamp emit?
It emits a soft, glare-free light downward, complemented by a warmer light directed upward. This dual diffusion illuminates a space while maintaining an enveloping atmosphere around the light fixture.
What type of bulb should be used with the PH 3/3 Centenary Edition?
The pendant works with an LED bulb E27, which is not included. The knurled screws allow you to adjust the position of the light source inside the fixture to optimize its placement relative to the lampshades. The ceiling rose is included.
What makes this Centenary Edition special?
This 2026 Limited Edition marks the 100th anniversary of the PH system. It draws on the lighting principles conceived by Poul Henningsen in 1926 while reinterpreting them through a combination of burnished brass, amber glass, and white Opal Glass. Details directly inspired by the original models and the dark brown textile cable reinforce its historic character and vintage aesthetic.
With its hand-blown blown glass, controlled light, and now-iconic design, the PH 3/3 Centenary Edition by Louis Poulsen brings a century of research into light into your home. A pendant light to choose as much for its comfortable illumination as for the timeless strength of its heritage.
