An Icon Born to Master Light
Poul Henningsen developed the PH 5 in 1958 to accommodate the varying shapes and sizes of incandescent bulbs of the time. He sought to design a light fixture capable of providing pleasant light regardless of the light source used. The PH 5 thus incorporates the principles of his famous system of three reflective lampshades, designed to direct light while eliminating glare.
Originally, the PH 5 incorporated red and blue elements intended to correct the color of the light. These elements were later phased out as light sources evolved. Having become one of Louis Poulsen’s most recognizable models, the PH 5 has since been produced in numerous colors and finishes.
The Opaline Effect Reimagined in Acrylic
What sets this PH 5 Opal apart is its glossy, slightly translucent material. Its lampshades and anti-glare disc are made of PMMA, or Acrylic, while the spacers are made of Polycarbonate. Their opalescent appearance is inspired by Opaline glass used in other PH designs, while giving this 1958 model a lighter, more contemporary look.
The light is not limited to a downward Flux. The semi-transparent elements also diffuse soft ambient light in all directions. The result is more uniform illumination and broader coverage of the space, while preserving the visual comfort characteristic of the PH system.
