Designed in 1965 by Milanese architect Gae Aulenti, the Pipistrello was born of a free, visionary gesture: that of breaking with modernist rigor to invent a poetic, fluid, sculptural design. At a time when shapes were strict, Aulenti dared an undulating diffuser, inspired by the wings of a bat, and a novel telescopic Base - a daring technical gamble, taken up by Elio Martinelli. Two years of development later, the Pipistrello became a formal and industrial revolution. More than a lamp, it is a manifesto of Italian design in the 60s.
