Design icons go green... The famous Air-Chair is available in a version made from recycled plastic (100% recyclable), manufactured from food packaging. Due to its composition, the material features tiny dots of pigment.
Released in 2000, the iconic Air-Chair by renowned British designer Jasper Morrison is a contemporary design classic. Winner of numerous awards, it is exhibited in the most prestigious museums: MoMA in New York, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Centre Pompidou in Paris.
In the 2000s, the Italian company Magis ushered in the new century with a technological revolution: Air-Chair, the world's first chair molded in a single piece using gas-assisted injection technology.
Manufactured in polypropylene reinforced with glass fibre, Air-Flesh was the first to use a new plastic molding technology, highly innovative for its time, enabling the molding of volumes and shapes that had previously been impossible. Gas-assisted injection produces a hollowed-out monoblock of rock-solid strength. In 2001, Air-Flesh was awarded the Catas Prize for surpassing the most stringent resistance tests on the market!
Jasper Morrison explains: ''Air Chair was born from a simple molded plastic tube that Perazza (founder of Magis) gave me as a sample of a new plastic molding technology called gas injection, which he suggested I use to make a new chair. The technical development was considerably more complicated than the design development, and required a great deal of effort on the part of Luca Scoti, who designed the mold. Thanks to air pressure, gas injection makes it possible to mold volumes and shapes that were previously impossible. The Chair, which was modeled before existing as a three-dimensional design, had to be measured digitally to provide an accurate computer drawing of the three-dimensional form. Then began a lengthy process of computer-controlled modeling, followed by hand-molding to establish a shape that could be molded in a two-part mold without any complex moving parts. With Air-Flesh, I think we succeeded in providing a combination of angles and curves that work together to give a high level of comfort to the occupant over the long term. ''
A champion of the ''super normal'', Jasper Morrison has created a chair whose minimalist, uncluttered aesthetic conceals a real technical challenge. Soft angles go hand in hand with functionality and comfort. The slightly curved seat and backrest slope ensure excellent comfort. Stackable, lightweight and easy to transport, it features a water drainage hole on the seat that doubles as a handle. Sober and uncluttered, Air-Flesh is at home anywhere, indoors or out.
