Alvar Aalto (1898 - 1976) is one of Finland's most famous architects and designers. A true design icon, the 406 Armchair was designed in 1939. Its fluid, curved lines are the hallmark of Alvar Aalto, pioneer of organic design.
Repeatedly copied but never equalled, the 406 Armchair quickly became a benchmark. Its iconic shape is instantly recognizable. With its organic, flowing lines and materials reminiscent of Nature, the 406 armchair offers users an ideal sitting position. The cantilevered frame offers flexible, comfortable seating. Supple and ergonomic, the seat is woven from Linen straps that follow the shape of the body. As wood evolves over time, the armrests are formed from a single piece of wood which is then split in two, ensuring that the chair remains perfectly balanced as it ages.
As early as 1927, in close collaboration with cabinetmaker Otto Korhonen, Aalto explored the possibilities of glued laminated wood - prior to this, tubular steel structures had dominated furniture design. Inspired by the creations of Breuer and Thonet, Aalto finally perfected an innovative process: successive gluing of several thin layers of specially molded Solid wood produces curves of over 90 degrees. The curved glued-laminated wood gives the Base, legs strength and flexibility. These experiments led to Artek's most technically innovative Armchairs, such as the 406.
All ARTEK bentwood furniture is manufactured in the Turku factory in Finland, using local wood. They combine modern production methods with skilled craftsmanship and carefully selected materials.
