Description
Created in 1970 by Ettore Sottsass, then Artistic Director of Poltronova, the Ultrafragola Mirror is a cult piece exhibited in the world's greatest museums. Inheriting the design counterculture of the 1960s, Ultrafragola is emblematic of the anti-design and radical Italian movement of which Sottsass was a leading figure. A star of contemporary interiors, prized by celebrities and an Instagram idol, the Ultrafragola mirror has enjoyed dizzying success on social networks in recent years.
The Ultrafragola mirror is part of the cult series "Mobili Grigi" presented by Sottsass in 1971. These anti-conformist creations, which run counter to a fixed way of thinking, bear witness to an unquenchable thirst for renewal and a refusal to accept standardization. Bright and luminous, this furniture in plastic and fiberglass reflects the codes of American popular culture. In the Mobili Grigi collection, light emanates from the furniture like a strange, metaphysical apparition. The ''Mobili Grigi'' series includes the Elledue bed and the Asteroide lamps (1968), but the work that has left a lasting mark on design history is the Ultrafragola mirror (1970), the only creation in the collection to go beyond the prototype stage into mass production.
This large, sinuous Acrylic mirror evokes a long, wavy head of hair. Once lit, it takes on a Pink hue that adds to its sensuality. Ultrafragola ("Ultra-fraise" in French) is evocative of feminine sensuality in both its name and its wavy forms. Inspired by the great wooden mirrors gilded with Gold leaf, Ultrafragola reinterprets tradition in a modern plastic material. There's also a ritualistic quality to this mirror, which seems to have emerged from an ancient, utopian civilization. With its sculptural dimensions, it's a masterpiece that breaks the codes of minimalist, sober decorating. Its pop, playful look is in keeping with the trend for curves and acid colors.
Ultrafragola features a thermoformed plastic frame. The frame is Translucent white when switched off, and glows Pink when switched on. The Mirror is fitted with a cable for mains connection (foot switch on cable).
Considered Italy's most avant-garde designer of the 20th century, Poltronova was born in 1957 from the meeting between Sergio Cammilli and Ettore Sottssas, who became the company's artistic director. A figurehead of anti-design and radical design, Poltronova helped change the history of design with its experimental, non-conformist approach. Freeing itself from commercial constraints, POLTRONOVA was the receptacle of radical trends, giving a voice to those who challenged the system and wished to express their creativity freely. Backed by the greatest talents of the time (Gae Aulenti, Archizoom, Superstudio, De Pas D'Urbino & Lomazzi, Paolo Portoghesi, Angelo Mangiarotti...), they imagined collections that were joyful and colorful, and above all extremely non-conformist. With no standards (except those they invent), Poltronova has chosen to flout the laws of marketing in order to offer visionary, experimental designs that are now part of museum collections the world over. Poltronova embodies a spirit of freedom, a value that is stronger than ever.
